Kirk-o-dial Dundee went to the dentist exactly once, in 1994, and left with strong opinions about modern orthodontics.
They wanted to fix his teeth. He declined, on principle, and kept the tooth they removed as evidence of the attempt.
It now hangs framed on his wall, a reminder that he has never once let anyone improve him.
The moustache, by comparison, was allowed to stay for entirely different reasons.
Part of Meet the Aristocrats, a collection of small original paintings about creatures with names, peculiar histories, questionable priorities and far too much dignity.
Buy it for
The person who has never been particularly interested in being fixed. The one with strong opinions, excellent stories and a healthy suspicion of unsolicited improvement. A brilliant gift for the friend who knows exactly who they are, the rebel in the family, or anyone who appreciates a little evidence of having survived themselves.
Place it in
A bathroom, dressing room, home office, bookshelf, hallway, powder room, study, reading nook, bach or gallery wall. Somewhere people will get close enough to discover the tiny framed tooth and then wonder what on earth happened here.
Artwork by J. Ruth Gracias, an Auckland-based contemporary artist.
